about me
A photograph is a dialogue between the moment and the viewer
My name is Ralph Brugger. As a photographer, I am driven by pure curiosity—about foreign cultures, the interplay of light and shadow in urban spaces, and the raw, authentic personality in a portrait. My website is the visual notebook of my discoveries.
Let yourself be inspired by the stories behind the images.
Travel
From Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Madagascar to Europe and Greece: My travel photography captures the contrasts of our world. I seek to strike a balance between world-famous destinations and hidden gems off the beaten path. A photographic journey in search of culture, nature, and authentic, unspoiled daily life.
landscape
Most of the landscape photographs were also taken during my travels over the course of many years. I am drawn to the colors and shapes of foreign worlds.
animals
Over the years, I've taken most of my animal photos while traveling—in Indonesia, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Greece, and many other places.
Theatre & Concert
I got my start in theater photography in 1995, taking black-and-white photos for my theater friends at www.comoedia-mundi.de. For a new production, I photograph the dress rehearsal and the final run-through using two cameras during an actual performance without disturbing the audience. I love capturing the perspectives and moments and showcasing the people, the set design, the lighting, and the costumes.
Documentation
For me, documentary photography usually means capturing the connection between people and everyday situations. It’s not about showcasing spectacular moments, but rather about capturing the ordinary—perhaps in situations we tend to overlook.
Portrait
Portrait photography fascinates me because of its ability to reveal what lies beneath the surface. I deliberately choose not to focus solely on capturing conventional beauty. I am interested in the rough edges, the transience, and the depth of human existence. The goal of my work is to capture the uniqueness and authentic personality of the person in front of my camera.
Urban
City life, the underground, architecture, and subways: My urban photography portrays the city as a living organism. I document the contrast between monumental structures and the fleeting everyday life of the underground. An honest, graphic look at life in step with the metropolis.
