portrait Indonesia 2026
The encounters with the people in Indonesia were simply incredible. With just a few words of Bahasa, you can make contact in no time. If you don’t ask whether you can take a photo, people will often ask if you’d like to take one – and then show it to you.
The photos show men from a traditional tribe who are Caci dancers.
Meaning: The word ‘Caci’ roughly translates as a ritual duel or fight. The custom serves to demonstrate masculinity, courage and skill, and is traditionally performed at harvest festivals or New Year ceremonies.
Equipment: The attackers use a rattan whip (pecut or caci), whilst the defenders protect themselves with a round shield made of buffalo hide (nggiling).
Procedure: Accompanied by drums and gongs, the dancers take turns trying to strike their opponent with the whip, whilst the other defends against the blow.
